Why specify a Yanmar engine
Yanmar small diesel engines set the standard for compact gensets used in telecom shelters, cold-chain containers and marine auxiliary power. They start reliably at low ambient temperature and run very quietly.
- Best-in-class for 5 – 100 kVA
- Compact, lightweight and quiet
- Excellent cold-start behaviour

Both 50 Hz and 60 Hz builds are listed. Model codes carry the standby rating and, where two builds share a rating, a trailing letter.
Yanmar declares ratings at 25 °C ambient and sea level, with a clear derate table for altitude. Because these are small naturally aspirated engines, the altitude penalty is noticeable: around 3 % per 300 m above 1,000 m on some models.
Small sets, real engineering
At this size every centimetre of enclosure matters, and every decibel is noticed by the neighbours.
Yanmar sets are almost always canopied, because the applications — telecom shelters, rooftop standby, small marine auxiliaries — are noise-sensitive and space-constrained. The canopy is a single-skin acoustic design with removable side panels, so the set can be serviced without lifting it out. Container builds only appear when a site banks eight or ten small units into one 20 ft frame.

Already running a Yanmar set?
Yanmar injectors, fuel lift pumps, radiator caps and the small-engine service kits are cheap and widely stocked, which suits fleet operators with many sites.
Yanmar sets, answered plainly
The three things buyers ask us most about this engine platform.
About 66 kVA at 50 Hz from the 4TNV98 family. Above that the platform no longer competes on footprint and you should look at FPT or Perkins.
Yes with the high-ambient canopy option, which adds louvre area and a larger radiator. Without it the set will derate or trip on high coolant temperature by mid-afternoon.
The TNV models are rated for prime duty, but most installations are standby. For continuous running above 40 kVA we usually steer customers to a larger platform.
